Microsoft SQL Server

SQL Server access via standard host/port/database credentials. Read tools reject mutating SQL; write tools allow only INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE.

Operational order

1. List databases or list tables / search schema before writing ad hoc SQL.
2. Inspect schema for column, key, and index detail on a known table (prefer over describe schema for new work).
3. List rows or search rows for bounded table reads with pagination.
4. Explain query when a SELECT is slow — estimated SHOWPLAN by default; set analyze for actual plans.
5. Execute read SQL only for SELECT/WITH/SHOW-style statements you have validated against live schema.
6. Insert row, update rows, or execute write SQL for parameterized mutations; delete rows requires confirm_write=true.

Encryption

Set encrypt to true for Azure SQL and other TLS-required hosts. trust_server_certificate may be required for self-signed dev instances.

Gotchas

• Schema names default to dbo in describe/search helpers — pass schema_name when objects live elsewhere.
• describe_schema is legacy column-only detail; use inspect_schema for keys, indexes, and row estimates.
• update_rows returns a preview of matching rows by default before applying the UPDATE.
• execute_read_sql and execute_write_sql reject statements outside their allowed classes.
• Write tools block DROP, ALTER, CREATE, TRUNCATE, MERGE, and EXEC.
